Don't become another statistic.
Approximately every 50 seconds, a residential burglary is committed in the United States, many occurring while the victim is at home. In fact, the average homeowner has a 1 in 6 chance of being burglarized. But at what locations do burglars typically gain access to a home?
34% Front Door – Many people are surprised by this statistic, but yes, the majority of home break-ins are usually committed by kicking in or forcing open the front door.
23% First Floor Windows – First-floor windows are, unfortunately, the second most common entry point; the surprising part is that many burglars gain access through unlocked windows.
22% Back Door – Back doors are kicked open less often than front doors. This is probably because the intruder has more privacy (concealed by fences, shrubs, etc.) and therefore more time to jimmy open your lock.
9% Garage – Ironically, some burglars will use your own tools to break into your house. Do not forget to add protection for your garage, even if you have an alarm installed.
6% Unlocked Entrances and Storage Areas – Always lock all of your doors and windows, even if you will only be out for a few minutes.
4% Basement – This statistic is surprisingly low, probably because many homes do not have basements (Florida, for example). Nevertheless, do not neglect adding security protection for your basement.
